Learning how to set goals is one of the best things you can do for yourself. The process can help you visualize your potential, and then help you turn that dream into reality. Once you decide the direction that you want to go in life, you have a better chance of doing so. You can focus your energy on getting what you want, instead of fencing with windmills.

Positive statements are most helpful in setting up a list of goals. They must be written, specific, realistic, and prioritized. Since many people, places, and things are out of your control, your goals should be focused on action, and not outcome. Only concern yourself with what you can accomplish.

Initially, you can think of broad spectrum of your life, and decide what you would prefer to accomplish. Narrowing down specific parts of it, imagine what would be the crowning achievements in those areas. Then choose only a few to work on, and prioritize them according to importance for you. Set objectives for short-term, intermediate, and long-term objectives for each.

When you have selected and prioritized your goals, you will need to identify daily activities that will support your objectives.

Setting goals is a way of evaluating what is really important to you, not only what others want for you or from you. It also helps to identify possible distractions and roadblocks. The process can be a motivating factor, and help to build self-confidence as you meet small objectives.

It is important to periodically review and alter your goals. The ones that were too easily achieved should spur you to increase the challenge level of your remaining goals. Conversely, if you have set goals that insure failure, discouragement is likely to prevent you from reaching the others, and should be revised.

Enjoy the achievement of goals. Be proud of your accomplishments and give yourself appropriate rewards. When you fail to meet a goal, use the information learned to change other goals if needed. It is important to plan for success. Otherwise, you are not likely to experience it
